"
A store that sells a thousand stories....."
(the following contains excerpts from
an article in Norman Living Magazine written by Michelle Wiginton)
Opening the great wood,
iron and glass green door that serves as a passageway the Green Door Mercantile
is like slipping between
the pages of a wonderful adventure novel where you take a part of the story home
with you when you are done. Gina and Paul Clifford consider themselves the
never-ending story tellers. "The green front door came from Cairo,
Egypt and is one of six sets of doors that were removed from a block of
buildings that were being remodeled and now have a new home in our store,"
shares Paul, who is a plethora of history and information on everything from
paint and stains to Harleys and antique cars. " When Napoleon, in 1798,
conquered Cairo without firing a shot, it quickly became the premier vacation
spot for the French and, thus, their influence in construction for a time. This
door is from that time period."
A simply wonderful
mix of old antiques and new merchandise that seems to replicate
priceless pieces of yesteryear are to be found in the comfortable atmosphere
behind the green door. Paul, and expert painter and furniture restoration
professional, has brought many of the store's pieces back to their original
grandeur and decor. " The style of the Ming Dynasty is back in reds and
clear finishes," states Paul as he shows me a beautiful, red distressed
China hutch and several complimentary accessories.
The store displays
have definite themes.... nautical, African, South American, rustic,
European...but the flow is easy on the eye and blends into the eclectic
atmosphere that is the Green Door Mercantile. There are hand-carved items
from Africa, a 1924 Model T that Paul and Gina restored, and a fun selection of
hand-crafted neon clocks that testify to their love of motorcycles.
Looking
around, I spy some creative switch plate covers that are manufactured in
ceramics, with a three-dimensional design. Gina says that these custom-made
pieces come from Canada and offer a myriad of styles and themes. Baskets,
candles, a wall of clocks and a fabulous pair of iron eye glasses catch my eyes.
There are many items to see, feel and touch.
Having fallen
in love with the store and it's owners, I have come to appreciate Paul and
Gina's commitment to their customers in regard to providing
merchandise with a sense of tradition, value and that means
something to its new owner. "We offer items with a story or that represent
a story," smiles Paul, as he shows me a faux marble top Indonesian table he
masterfully painted. "If an item speaks to us in a certain way and has a wonderful
story to tell, we know our clients will also love hearing the history behind it
and take that bit of history home with them to add to their own lives"
...it truly is a never-ending story.
